The game was divided into stages or 'instruments', each a delightful contraption of familiar objects ready to make noise at your command. Progress through the stage to uncover more objects to play with, hitting various high score targets to unlock additional stages and game modes.
Stages would get harder as you advanced, increasing the number of objects that could be played, which gave players one more thing to think about. Ultimately a players skill determined how far they'd go, so practise was of the utmomst importance, very similar to learning an instrument.
